TOPSHAM
Topsham police pursued a vehicle last week through the Topsham Fair Mall that was allegedly driven by a suspect in an ongoing burglary investigation.
Police received information the evening of Sept. 6 that a man they were attempting to locate, 25-yearold Jonathan Hummel, would be at Wendy’s in the mall. There was also a probation hold in place for Hummel, a transient from the Bath-Brunswick area.
Topsham Police Sgt. Robert Ramsay said he spotted the suspect driving by Starbucks, and signaled for Hummel to stop with his emergency lights and siren.
Hummel allegedly sped up as Ramsay pursued him across the back of the mall and into the Smitty’s parking lot. Then officer Donald Cowles took over the pursuit. He followed Hummel down Topsham Fair Mall to Winter Street and River Road, and onto Whitehouse Crossing Road where police lost sight of the vehicle.
Ramsay said the next day, Hummel was located in Richmond and arrested on the probation violation and would also be charged with eluding a police officer, burglary and theft.
