BANGOR — The University of Southern Maine men’s cross country team opened its 2016 competitive season Saturday morning by topping a field of six teams at the Husson Harrier Invitational.
The Huskies, making their first appearance in the meet since 2014, easily outdistanced the field, scoring 24 points. Runner-up University of New Brunswick totaled 57 points, and St. Joseph’s College took third with 83.
Sophomore Ben Foster led the Huskies, crossing the finish line in second place overall after covering the 4.3- mile course in 24:38.4. Rookie Nick Harriman of Lisbon was close behind, taking third place in 24:42.
Josh Shanks of the University of New Brunswick was the individual winner, leading the field with his time of 24:15.3.
The Huskies will travel to Pineland Farms in New Gloucester this upcoming Saturday at 11 a.m. for the Bates College Super XC Shootout.
Harriman was also named Little East Conference Runner of the Week.
