The Portland Water District has lifted a boil water order for three Portland islands.
The order that customers on Peaks, Cushing and Little Diamond islands boil water before drinking ended at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
All tests of water conducted Tuesday indicated the water is safe to consume, according to a water district official.
Customers had been cautioned to boil water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking, making ice cubes, washing food, brushing teeth or any other activity that involved consuming water. Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms that could potentially be in the water.`
The district had issued the order Monday night after a water main break to protect public health from potential contamination.
Questions can be directed to the water district at 761-8310 or State of Maine Drinking Water Program at 287-2070.
