 9/11 Memorial Service

On Sunday, Sept. 11, Windham Assembly of God will host a community 9/11 Memorial Service at 6 p.m. to commemorate the 15th anniversary of that fateful day. Light refreshments will be served. Windham Assembly of God is located at 1051 Roosevelt Trail. For more information, call 415-2879 or Hope Fellowship at 233-6086. All first responders are welcome to attend, and the service is open to the public.

Book talk

On Monday, Sept. 19, author Ron Romano will introduce his book, “Early Gravestones in Southern Maine: The Genius of Bartlett Adams,” at 7:30 p.m. at the Windham Historical Society. Adams was the first stone carver in Portland and about a third of all headstones at Portland’s Eastern Cemetery were from the Adams shop. Many, dating from the 1700s, are found in Windham’s oldest graveyards. Refreshments will be served following the program. There is no charge, but donations are always welcome to help further the historical society’s work.

Portsmouth trip

Register by Wednesday, Sept. 7, you’d like to go on a special trip for seniors, to Portsmouth, N.H. The Parks and Recreation Department is joining area recreation departments to offer “The Best of Portsmouth Foodie Tour” on Wednesday, Sept. 21, leaving at 10 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m. Visit five famous restaurants for special tastings and sightseeing. Food Pantry

Senior pick-up day will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, this month, due to the Monday holiday. We are reminding everyone that the pantry could use donations of paper goods and cleaning products, as well as personal hygiene items. These are all items that are not covered by food stamps but are necessary!

Community Celebration

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church will hold a Community Celebration from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, including a bouncy house, cotton candy, DJ Dave and Sparks Ark. The public is welcome.

Jazz at church

The Bellamy Jazz Band will perform at North Windham Union Church at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, as part of the Music with a Mission program. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admittance is $12, $10 for seniors. Part of the proceeds will benefit Maine Neighbors Helping Neighbors. The North Windham Union Church is located at 723 Roosevelt Trail in Windham, and is air-conditioned. News from the Veterans Center

• Got question about benefits? Veteran Service Officer Jerry Smith from the Lewiston VA Office will be at Windham Veterans Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and on the second Wednesday each month. No appointment is necessary. Smith may be contacted at 783-5306.

• Flags will come down after Labor Day and new hardware is needed for next year. Donations can be made to Field Allen Post 148 Flag Fund, Box 1776, Windham. $25 covers the cost of a new pole and bracket.

• The annual Toby Pennels Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at the Windham Veterans Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Sponsors include the American Legion Field Allen Post 138, VFW Post 10643, Windham Veterans Association and Coldwell-Bankers Real Estate. Donors may contact the Red Cross for an appointment (1-800-RED-CROSS).

• Field-Allen Post 148 of the American Legion will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Windham Veterans Center. Supper is at 5 p.m. and a business meeting will be at 6 p.m. New members are most welcome.
