YORK — With only four returning starters on both sides of the ball, the Falmouth High football team is bound to make mistakes.

But if the Yachtsmen put up half as many positives on a weekly basis as they did Friday night in a 56-30 victory against York in a Class B South opener, the negatives will be overshadowed.

Garrett Aube rushed for three scores in a running offense that totaled 271 yards, Jack Bryant finished with 231 yards passing and two TDs, and Griffin Aube returned a fumble 52 yards for Falmouth.

The Yachtsmen, who finished 9-2 last year and reached the regional final, have put in a new spread offense and are expected to contend again.

“Offensively, you saw we have some horsepower in running and passing, and it was on display today. It was great to see,” said Coach John Fitzsimmons.

Fitzsimmons wasn’t surprised by York, which led 3-0 after a 9½- minute, game-opening drive and was down only 10 at the half.

“This is York County and they always play hard to the end of the game,” he said. “Consequently, it’s a great way to come down and open with a win. Anytime you win in York County you walk away feeling pretty good.”

York Coach Randy Small was surprised at the score, noting his teams don’t generally allow 50-plus points.

“You put up 30 points, you should have an opportunity to win. But if you allow 56, you have no chance,” said Small.

Small knew Bryant, who broke all of Falmouth’s single-season quarterback school records last year as a sophomore, would inflict damage. But the running game – which also saw two rushing scores by Brandon Martin – is what decided it.

“We weren’t following our keys (on Falmouth’s running plays) and we started to guess,” said Small. “When you guess, this is what happens.”

York scored late in the first half on a 12-yard pass from Trevor LaBonte (11 of 21, 112 yards, 3 TDs) to Andrew Rodrigues (86 yards rushing, 28 yards receiving), to cut the lead to 20-10. But any momentum was lost in the third quarter when the Yachtsmen racked up a 28-6 advantage for a 48-16 bulge.

Falmouth scored on the first possession of the second half when Griffin Aube, the twin brother of Garrett Aube, picked up a Bryant fumble and sprinted 52 yards.

After an Orlando Simmons sack to force a York punt, Garrett Aube notched his second TD when he skipped outside on an off-tackle run and scampered 6 yards.

The score, for a 34-10 lead with 4:47 left in the third quarter, came a little more than five minutes after his brother found the end zone.

Bryant said Falmouth’s spread offense has been shaky but this victory showed its capabilities.

“We switched to a spread offense this year so we’re hoping to score some points,” said Bryant, whose TD passes went for 63 yards to Will Blum and 80 to Max Fortier.

“(The offense) has been difficult at times (to execute) but we are hoping for performances like this and hope we keep having them.”
