Windham’s Dollar General is nearing completion on Route 302, with a design that gives a nod to New England-style architecture.
Despite some minor setbacks in the construction process, the project is on schedule and is set to be open in early October.
Sanford-based TPD Construction broke ground on the 9,100-square-foot building in mid-May, according to Josh Howe, superintendent. On Monday, Aug. 29, the crew finished the first round of paving what will be a 32-car parking lot.
The building differs slightly from the typical Dollar General design – a large box with a flat roof and a brick facade.
The Windham location has off-white vinyl siding, a pitched roof and faux windows facing the road. These accents make it “more attractive for the community,” said Howe this week.
When the project was first proposed in June 2015, the Windham Planning Board, as well as members of the public, criticized the design’s lack of character, saying they didn’t want more buildings in the style of North Windham development in other areas of town.
The revised design was narrowly approved by the board that July, with 3-2 in favor of the store.
Howe said when the crew first broke ground, they realized the soil underneath the 1.72-acre property, in a field off of Route 302, was unsuitable for building. The answer was to bring in structural gravel, which proved a minor setback.
Other factors have helped keep the project on track, however. Howe said the sunny, dry days that have been detrimental to farmers are beneficial to construction crews, allowing them more outdoor days.
The lot, at 361 Roosevelt Trail, is owned by John and Vicki Mann. The lot was home to a gas station during the 1960s and a water park in the 1990s.

Windham’s Dollar General, re-designed with features of New England-style architecture after its original designed received scrutiny from the Planning Board in 2015, is nearing completion. The store is on schedule to open in October.
