The Intervale Mercantile Co. at 4 School St. in Freeport was robbed at gunpoint Friday morning, police said.

Freeport Police Chief Susan Nourse said in a statement that the armed robbery took place at 8:40 a.m. when a male entered the store and took the owner’s wallet and put several thousands dollars’ worth of merchandise into a leather satchel before fleeing.

The robbery is under investigation, the chief said. Further information was not available.
