A Portland man was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges after a police dog found heroin in the man’s car during a traffic stop.
Maine State Police Trooper John Darcy pulled over a car driven by 31-year-old Erik Ross on I-295 around 7 p.m. for a traffic violation. After the trooper determined Ross was driving without a license and had an active warrant for his arrest, Ross was detained while police searched his car.
Darcy found a bag of suspected heroin in Ross’ front pocket, according to police. Trooper Adam Schmidt and his K9 Ibo were called to the scene to assist with the arrest. Ibo indicated there was suspected heroin in the trunk and in the front of the car, police said. Troopers found a crack cocaine pipe and marijuana pipe in the car.
Ross was taken to Cumberland County Jail and booked on the warrant as well as charges of possession of heroin and operating without a license. Before going into the jail, Ross admitted he had more heroin in a hidden piece of fabric near the zipper of his shorts, police said.
