Frank Morang, left, of Freeport, with his friend, Keigan Shea, celebrates after the Maine Youth Championship Aug. 13.

The USA Track and Field Maine Youth Championship unfolded at Cony High School in Augusta on Saturday, Aug. 13. More than 1,200 athletes toughed out rainy conditions to take part, with frequent headliner Frank Morang, 12, of Freeport among them. Morang, seen here with his best friend, Keigan Shea, also of Freeport, qualified for six events, but because of his age grouping (Morang is 12), was only allowed to compete in three. Morang chose the 100, 200 and Long Jump, winning all three and setting a new state record (13.25) in the 100.

Jordan Knighton and Macy Johnson, both Freeporters as well, also competed at the championship. Freeport youth typically run with the Falmouth Rec Department’s Falmouth Flyers team during the summer, as Freeport does not have its own track.
