Nomination papers available

Nomination papers are now available for  three Town Council seats and two on the School Committee in the municipal election this fall. The five are all for three-year terms.

The expiring Town Council terms are those of Town Council Chairman Matthew Robinson, Benjamin Hartwell and Bruce Roullard. For the School Committee, expiring terms are now held by Kyle Bailey and Sean Curran.

Any registered voter of the town of Gorham interested in running for either of these offices must submit nomination papers with no less than 25 signatures and no more than 100 signatures of persons who are registered voters of Gorham, an announcement said.

Nominations must be submitted in the office of Town Clerk Laurie Nordfors no later than 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. The  municipal election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8. For more information, call the clerk’s office at 222-1670.

Author Chester Kay

speaks in North Gorham

Chester Kay will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at North Gorham Public Library, 2 Standish Neck Road, Gorham. A retired minister, Kay has worked in a national denomination office, higher education and New England churches. He wrote “A Promise to Keep,” an adventure story about boys and the friendships and community that shaped them.

Grange combined meeting

White Rock Grange is hosting a combined installation ceremony with Oak Hill of Scarborough and Highland Lake of Westbrook on Thursday, Sept. 1.

A supper will be served at 6 p.m. followed by an open meeting at 7 p.m. Ann Rust, White Rock  secretary/lecturer, said it will recognize two members with long-term certificates. They are Stephen Orach, 65 years, and Pauline Spencer, 40 years.

Invasive plant workshop

Presumpscot Regional Land Trust is hosting a three-hour workshop at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Cummings Preserve in Gorham about identifing and reporting invasive plants. The workshop is free but RSVP is required by visiting www.prlt.org.

Church  financial workshop

South Gorham Baptist Church on County Road (Route 22) is hosting Financial Peace University, a nine-session series taught by Dave Ramsey, on Saturdays that begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 17.

In a church announcement released by Janet Macleod, the series teaches how to dump debt, craft a budget, make smart choices about real estate, mortgages, college planning and insurance; and how to retire with dignity. There is a cost for materials and the Dave Ramsey website is offering them for $93 per couple.

U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Aug. 11 that the U.S. public debt was $19,404,383,126,105.06.

The author of “A Promise to Keep,” Chester Kay, will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at North Gorham Public Library.
