First, you hounded U.S. Sen. Susan Collins about her position on Donald Trump. Then you printed opinion pieces condemning Republicans who do not repudiate Trump. Once Collins decided and announced she could not support him, you published letters criticizing her for not denouncing him quickly or vehemently enough.
The whole sequence epitomizes the blind antagonism underlying our current political predicament.
Fairly assessed, Susan Collins made a difficult decision for a senior elected official of the Republican Party in her typical, thoughtful manner. She is a voice of reason in a time of rancor: principled, hardworking and civil. Most people recognize it. Those who don’t are part of our problem.
We need more of her kind and less of her critics.
