A Harvest Gathering takes place Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 24 Main Street/Pennell Park. This new town festival will feature four local bands and showcase many community organizations and local businesses. Participating local organization booths include: American Legion Post 86, Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park, Gray Historical Society, G-NG Adult Education, G-NG ATV Club, G-NG Booster’s Club, G-NG Destination Imagination, G-NG HS Brass Quintet, G-NG Lion’s Club, G-NG Optimist Club, G-NG HS Project Graduation, Gray Snowolves, Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad and New Gloucester Public Library and from Cumberland County, representatives from the Master Gardener’s program and Casco Bay CAN.

The non-stop lineup of free activities includes: Kid’s ¼-mile Fun Run at 9:20 a.m., immediately followed by a Diaper Derby; Team Challenge (3-person team contests) at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.; free horse-drawn wagon rides starting at 10 a.m.; Watermelon Eating Contests at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Blue Ribbon Tomato Judging and Oddest Vegetable Contest at 1 p.m.

Live musical performances start at 10 a.m., including: Living Highway, GNG Brass Quintet, Farmington and Humphrey, and Ton Def. A Community Market with food, crafts and school/community fundraisers will run from noon to 3 p.m.

Ongoing activities include: Dunk Tank, Children’s Activity Tent, Lawn Games and special guest appearances by alpacas and goats. Additional workshops include: “Troubleshoot your Garden.” “Canning 101,” “Solar Energy 101” and “Keeping Backyard Chickens.”

Gray’s End of Summer Fest – A Harvest Gathering is being held in conjunction with the Community Give-Away and the Youth Sports Equipment Swap, which start at 8 a.m.

Support local students

Proud associates of Edward Jones, Karen H Fuller, Mark G Morrison and Diethild Holbein, are asking all residents and business owners in Gray and New Gloucester to donate school supplies. They have set up a donation box at their office at 2 McConkey Road, Suite 2, Gray. Items can be dropped off at any time from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donated items may include notebooks, tissues and snacks. No cash or checks can be accepted.

11th Annual Teddy Bear Scramble

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland will hold its annual charity golf tournament at Spring Meadows Golf Club on Route 100 in Gray. The event will begin with registration at 7 a.m. and the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.

The tournament will feature cash prizes, contests for the longest drive and nearest the pin, and a chance to win a car, provided by Emerson Chevrolet, with a hole in one. Admission is $70 per person and includes green fees, cart and a barbecue lunch with beverage.

Tess Gerritsen, the internationally bestselling author whose works include the Rizzoli and Isles series and most recently the thriller, “Playing with Fire,” will read from and sign copies of her book at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Gray Rec mini-camp, tickets

Gray Rec will hold a Mini-Summer Day Camp Aug. 22-26 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for ages 5 to 12. The camp will run on the same type of schedule as the February and April vacation camps with half-day field trips, smaller numbers and fewer staff. Due to many staff returning to college, once the program is filled there will be no exceptions, so sign up as soon as possible.

In addition, discount tickets are available for Aquaboggan, Funtown/Splashtown, Sea Dogs, Water Country and York Wild Kingdom.

Pow Wow and bees

The Maine Wildlife Park on Route 26 in Gray will feature the ATTEAN Family Pow Wow on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14, starting at 9:30 a.m. Tribal representatives from Maine, New England and around the country will be at the park with native dancers, drummers, craft vendors, singers and traditional food booths. New this year will be a Grand Entry presented each day. Activities will be held all day, rain or shine. The event is sponsored by Cooks Hardware.

On the following Saturday, Aug, 20, at 11 a.m., Life of the Honeybee will be the featured program. Learn about the industrious life of the honeybee and the role of the beekeeper. Parts of the beehive and beekeeping equipment will be on display, and experienced beekeepers will be available to answer questions. A variety of native Maine honey and other natural products from the hives will be available for purchase. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park. Emergency parking restriction

The Gray Town Council has approved a proposed amendment, on an emergency basis, to restrict parking from the North Raymond Road intersection for 220 feet on the westbound side of the North Raymond Road.

This proposed emergency amendment went into effective Aug. 2, and will be in effect until early October.
