Author Talk
On Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 6-7 p.m., author Josh Christie will hold a book signing at Windham Public Library. He has written and contributed to a number of works of nonfiction, including “Maine Beer: Brewing in Vacationland,” “Maine Outdoor Adventure Guide” and “Read This.” He is a regular contributor to the Maine Sunday Telegram, and has written for several other publications. Finding history
Windham Historical Society, 234 Windham Center Road, is open to the public Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon throughout the summer. Drop in and visit the Civil War era displays including a “front parlor” and artifacts from that time. The society has many books and old maps (1853, 1871 and more) available, as well as other souvenirs. Monday meals and more
From St. Ann’s Episcopal Church come the following reminders for the community:
Essentials Pantry – non-food necessities, is open at St. Ann’s on the last Saturday each month, 8:30-9:30 a.m., for such things as cleaning products and personal care items.
Monday meals are held at the church throughout the summer. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and meal is served at 5:30 p.m. This is a free meal open to all.
School backpacks
The Windham Food Pantry Back Pack Program is signing up kids for back to school backpacks with supplies for grades K-8. To sign up, go to the Windham Pantry with proof of Windham residency. The last day to sign up is Tuesday, Aug. 23; no phone sign-ups will be taken. Donations for school supplies and backpacks will gladly be accepted at the pantry Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Food Pantry is almost directly across Route 202 (Gray Road) from Friends Church and next door to the Public Safety Building.

Vacation Bible School
Cornerstone Assembly of God on 48 Cottage Road in Windham will hold Vacation Bible School each evening from 6:30-8 p.m., Aug. 8-12. The theme will be “The Need of a New Beginning”. 9/11 Memorial Service
On Sunday, Sept. 11, Windham Assembly of God will host a community 9/11 Memorial Service at 6 p.m. to commemorate the 15th anniversary of that fateful day. It is planned to invite and honor local first responders of our police and fire-rescue departments and the 911 dispatchers, and to rememb those who were lost that day.
The service will include the Presentation of Colors by local Boy Scouts. Guest speaker will be Ray Gough, a first responder at Ground Zero. Light refreshments will be served. Military news
• Every Wednesday, a Veterans Social Mixer is held from 9-11 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. All veterans welcome.
• Windham VFW Post 10643 meets on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Veterans Center for a 5 p.m. social and dinner and a 6 p.m. business meeting.

The Windham Veterans Association is making a limited number of granite pavers available between now and the end of September 2016. There is limited space to accept an additional 50 pavers to be installed for Veterans Day in November, on a first-come basis. Each paver provides room for three lines of information about the Veteran with a maximum of 16 letters/spaces per line. Information may be name, rank, branch of service, period of service or war designation. Each paver is $50.
