‘Little Shop of Horrors’ auditions

Windham Center Stage Theater is holding auditions for ages 13 and up for its fall musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 6-9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, Aug. 9, 6-9 p.m. Callbacks are Saturday, Aug. 13, 1-4 p.m. Be prepared to sing 16 measures of both an uptempo Broadway tune and a Broadway ballad. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music and wear comfortable clothing. Auditions will be held at the theater at  Windham Town Hall, 8 School Road. Need Medicare help?
On Tuesdays, Aug. 2 and 16, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging will offer a Medicare seminar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 2, and from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16.

In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon on both days. The seminar and counseling will help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions – and help you enroll. Along with Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make an appointment with a Medicarea dvocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Vacation Bible School
Cornerstone Assembly of God on 48 Cottage Road in Windham will hold Vacation Bible School for children entering grades 1 through 6 each evening from 6:30-8 p.m., August 8-12. The theme will be “The Need of a New Beginning.” Various holidays will be used to share this theme. There will be crafts, games and snacks.  For more information, call 415-2879.

9/11 Memorial Service
On Sunday, Sept. 11, Windham Assembly of God will host a community 9/11 Memorial Service at 6 p.m. to commemorate the 15th anniversary of that fateful day. Local first responders of our police and fire-rescue departments and the 911 dispatchers will be invited and honored along with a remembrance of those who died that day. The service will include the Presentation of Colors by local Boy Scouts. Guest speaker will be Ray Gough, who was a first responder at Ground Zero. Light refreshments will be served. August at Senior Center
On Monday, Aug. 1, a Nutrition/Cooking Class will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Lakes Region Senior Center.  The next Monday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m., ice cream sundaes are on the agenda (donations appreciated). A new game – SEVEN – will be introduced at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, and light refreshments will be served.

Military News

• Every Wednesday, a Veterans Social Mixer is held from 9-11 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. All veterans welcome.

• American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 meets on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Veterans Center for a 5 p.m. social and dinner and a 6 p.m. business meeting. The agenda includes the budget proposal for 2017.

• Veteran Service Officer Jerry Smith will be available Wednesday, Aug 10, for office hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Center. Contact: 207 783-5306.

• The Windham Veterans Association is making a limited number of granite pavers available between now and the end of September 2016. There is limited space to accept an additional 50 pavers to be installed for Veterans Day in November, on a first-come basis. Each paver provides room for three lines of information about the veteran with a maximum of 16 letters/spaces per line. Info may be name, rank, branch of service, period of service or war designation. Each paver is $50. Free pants

All men’s and ladies long pants/slacks will be free at the North Windham Church UCC thrift shop in July. Men’s suit jackets will be $1 each. The shop is open 1-3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
