End of Summer Fest
Gray’s 2016 End of Summer Fest – a Harvest Gathering takes place Saturday, Aug. 27, at Pennell Park. The Fest will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a fun-filled schedule: live music, booths, interactive exhibits, children’s activity tent, family-friendly lawn games and more. A Kid’s Fun Run at 9 a.m.; 3-person team competitions at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.; and a Community Market from noon to 3 p.m. with festival food, crafts and local vendors. There will also be a Gray Community Give-Away and a Sports’ Equipment Swap starting at 8 a.m.
Volunteers, local musicians, and a few more craft vendors are needed to help the day of the event along with local sponsors and in-kind donations. Help out local students
Edward Jones associates Karen H. Fuller, Mark G. Morrison and Diethild Holbein have started a personal campaign this summer. They’re asking all residents and business owners of Gray and New Gloucester to donate school supplies for children in need. They have set up a donation box at their office at 2 McConkey Road, Suite 2, Gray. Items can be dropped off at any time 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Donated items can include notebooks, tissues, snacks and more. No cash or checks will be accepted. Your generosity is appreciated.
Bullen attends Clerks’ Institute
Gray’s Deputy Town Clerk, Elizabeth C. Bullen, recently completed her third year of studies at the New England Municipal Clerks’ Institute at Plymouth (N.H.) State University. Year Three is the final year of the Institute program, continuing its emphasis on public relations, parliamentary procedure, decision-making, personal development, management, computers, public speaking and professionalism.
The New England Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy is a three-year program that assists clerks in developing and maintaining the high level of administrative expertise needed for the successful operation of increasingly complex municipal governments.
Annual Teddy Bear Scramble
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland will hold its 11th annual Teddy Bear Scramble charity golf tournament at Spring Meadows Golf Club on Route 100 in Gray. Registration is at 7 a.m., followed with a shotgun start at 8:15.
The tournament will include cash prizes, contests for the longest drive and nearest the pin, and a chance to win a car, provided by Emerson Chevrolet, with a hole in one. The cost of $70 per person includes green fees, cart and a barbeque lunch with beverage.
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland offers tutoring at no charge to children with dyslexia and similar language-based learning difficulties in the Southern Maine region. The center also offers, free of charge, a course in the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham method for individuals who wish to work with children who have dyslexia.

Chicken BBQ time
The 51st Annual Chicken BBQ wil be held Saturday, Aug. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Gray Fire Rescue, 125 Shaker Road.
August at the Rec
Brixology and Engineering Mad Science Camp will be held Aug. 8-12 , 9 a.m.-3 p.m., for ages 6-12 at Dunn School. Campers step into the shoes of engineers in this camp full of rockets and wacky machines. For more information go to: Madscience.org/maine or call 878-2222.
Gray Rec will hold a Mini-Summer Day Camp, Aug. 22-26, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., for ages 5 to 12. This camp will run on the same type of schedule as the February and April vacation camps with half-day field trips, but with smaller numbers and fewer staff. Spaces are limited. Please sign up ASAP if interested.

Rocks and logs
The Maine Wildlife Park, Route 26, will feature the New England Mineral Association on Saturday, July 30. Learn about minerals and gemstones found in different localities in Maine.There will be hands-on education stations and knowledgeable people to answer questions. Go to www.nemineraleducation.org.
On the following Saturday, Aug. 6, four Maine chainsaw carvers, Ron Carlson, Tim Pickett, Dan Burns and Andrew Logan, will be at t he park using their chainsaws to create eagles, bears and more.
