In an ongoing statewide heroin sting operation, Maine state drug agents arrested a New York man Thursday on the Western Promenade in Portland and seized 180 doses of heroin with an estimated street value of $3,000, officials said Thursday.

Bobby A. Forte, of the Bronx, was charged with aggravated trafficking of heroin, according to Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Cmdr. Scott Pelletier. Forte, who is on federal probation in New York for weapons charges, was arrested on an outstanding New York warrant for pending weapons and drug trafficking charges.

He is being held without bail at Cumberland County Jail on the New York charges as a fugitive. Bail was set at $50,000 for the Maine drug charges.

Local MDEA agents have been investigating the sale of heroin in the Portland area by a New York-based group. Agents identified several people suspected of delivering and selling heroin to local drug users, and agents made several undercover purchases of heroin, Pelletier said.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is reviewing charges against several other people identified in the same sting as working with Forte, Pelletier said.
