Maine Warden Carleton Richardson and Peter Shikli pause for a photo after Richardson led Shikli from a swamp in Lebanon Sunday night, where he landed after a skydive.
LEBANON — Rescuers used GPS coordinates linked to a cellphone to help a skydiver who went off course during a parachute drop and landed in a swamp.

The man was reported missing Sunday night after he jumped from a plane at Skydive New England.

Fire officials in Lebanon this morning identified him as 66-year-old California resident Peter Shikli.

Skydive New England sent out a crew to look for the skydiver and called for help, according to Lebanon Fire Chief Dan Meehan.

Fire officials say the man landed safely in the swamp near Route 202. His general location was determined using GPS coordinates, but he wasn’t able to stay on the phone because the battery was dying.

Meehan said in a statement that Shikli was able to hear rescue sirens and called 911.

“The phone coordinates placed the jumper at approximately 540 Carl Broggi Highway in a very swampy area off the road,” said Meehan.

The fire chief said a series of horn blasts and sirens helped orient the missing skydiver to his own position in conjunction to the highway, and Maine Warden Carleton Richardson went into the swamp on foot to conduct a search. Voice contact was made at 10:02 p.m., and the two left the swamp an hour later.

Meehan wrote that Shikli was wet and tired from his ordeal, but not injured.

“He reported that, from the air, he thought he was landing on a small hill with alders and shrubs. He had no idea that he was entering a mosquito-filled swamp,” Meehan said.

According to an internet search, Peter Shikli is an experienced skydiver. A YouTube video shows him jumping from aircraft, and there are links to a series of photographs from a skydive from a hot air balloon.
