Ten Hannaford stores will be sold to help clear the way for the merger of supermarket giants Delhaize Group and Ahold, but no stores in Maine are involved.

The companies said Thursday that they will sell 86 stores, all in markets where both companies operate. The two companies expect to complete their merger by the end of this month, but must get approval from the Federal Trade Commission for both the merger and the sale of the stores.

Belgium-based Delhaize operates under the Food Lion and Hannaford brands in the U.S. Ahold, which is headquartered in the Netherlands, operates under the Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Martin’s Food, Peapod and bfresh brands.

Eight of the Hannaford stores are in Massachusetts and are being sold to Big Y, Delhaize said in a release Thursday. Two of the Hannaford stores are in New York and are being sold to Tops Friendly Markets.

The merger is not expected to result in any job losses at Hannaford’s headquarters in Scarborough, spokesman Eric Blom said.

“We’re not anticipating any impact,” Blom said.

The two corporations announced their intent to merge last summer.
