The Old Orchard Beach Surge (18-15) defeated the visiting Sullivan Explorers (16-16) with a final score of 4-1 on Thursday night at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.
The Surge took the lead in the second inning. Third baseman Luc Pomales reached base on walk, advancing to third on a double from Sean Washington. Catcher Nathan Schwertner would knock a sac fly, scoring Pomales. Shortstop Joshua Martinez would score Washington on an RBI single, giving the Surge a 2-0 lead.
The Explorers would pick up their only run of the game in the fourth, off a solo homerun from first baseman Kevin Putkonen.
The Surge would take a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, off an RBI single from designated hitter Jacob Fabry. First baseman Chris Allen would knock an RBI single in the seventh, putting the Surge ahead 4-1.
Newly acquired right-handed pitcher Carlos Pinales would pick up a win, throwing a complete game, in his Surge debut. Pinales allowed one run on nine hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Surge were outhit by the Explorers 9-8, with right fielder Sean Washington leading the team with three. Left fielder Brandon Cooksey led the team with two runs.
The Surge return to action tomorrow night for game 2 of their four-game series with the Explorers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Newly acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Kostalos will be making his Surge debut on the mound.
