WELLS — The DaPonte String Quartet launches its 25th summer season with “Clarinet Envy,” a pair of classic clarinet quintets featuring guest artist Mark Dover.

Dover is “delighted and honored” to be back in Maine and performing with the DaPonte again.

“A string quartet that has been together for 24 years and plays at as high a level as the DaPonte Quartet is an extremely rare find,” he said. “They have a treasure trove of experience interpreting the great masterworks of our repertoire.”

Praised by Opera News for his “exemplary playing,” Dover is the newest member of Grammy-nominated Imani Winds. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, among others.

“Clarinet Envy,” consists of Mozart’s Quintet in A Major K. 581 and Brahms’ Quintet in B Minor Op. 115 are “considered to be two of the greatest chamber works ever composed,” according to Dover. Both pieces were written at the peak of the composer’s power, and Dover says clarinetists are “deeply thankful to have these two masterpieces in our repertoire.”
