Day Camp: Creatures of the Deep. Explore the amazing diversity of life under the sea. Discover the largest and smallest inhabitants of this watery world through fun experiments, treasure hunts and a hike to the ocean’s edge. Event is for ages 6 to 10. Cost is $50/$40. Scholarships available. Registration required. Event takes place at Wells Reserve at Laudholm.
Tuesday, July 5, 7-11 a.m.
Bird Banding Demonstration. Visit the bird banding station at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, where bird studies have been ongoing for more than 25 years. Scientists from the Biodiversity Research Institute and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute are contributing to knowledge of bird migration, breeding activities, life spans, and vector ecology. Free with site admission. 342 Laudholm Farm Road, Wells.
Tuesday, July 5, 9 a.m.-3 p.m .
Day Camp: Nature Quest. Solve estuarine mysteries while hiking and kayaking the Wells Reserve at Laudholm for a week. Follow trails and navigate the estuary, using maps, props, and research tools to find hidden locations, discover watershed life, and explore new habitats from top to bottom. Event is for ages 13 to 15. Cost is $160/$130. Scholarships available. Registration required. Wells Reserve at Laudholm.
Tuesday, July 5, 10 a.m.
Secrets of the Salt Marsh Walk. Learn what is special about these productive ecosystems, nestled between seashore and uplands, on a docent-led walk that covers about 1 mile. Free with site admission. Wells Reserve at Laudholm.
Wednesday, July 6, 1-2 p.m.
Flying Jewels: The Dragonflies and Butterflies of Southern Maine. Join Sue Bickford, Wells Reserve natural resource specialist, to learn about the beautiful insects known as Odonata and Lepidoptera. After an introduction to their life histories, we will set out to capture and examine some of these flying jewels up close. Nets supplied. Cost is $7/$5 or $15 per family. Registration required.
Thursday, July 7, 12:30 p.m.
Kayaking on the Little River Estuary. Paddle the quiet waters of a Maine estuary, watching for wildlife and learning about this treasured habitat from a registered Maine Kayak Guide. Event is for ages 12 and up and some restrictions apply. Cost is $50/$40. Registration required. Event takes place at Wells Reserve at Laudholm.
