THE BRUNSWICK ALL-STARS pulled off a dramatic victory over the Ararat All-Stars in the U11 Cal Ripken District Tournament Championship game on Thursday night. Trailing 9-8 entering the bottom of the last inning, Matt Orlando, above getting mobbed by his teammates, hit a three-run walk-off home run to send the Brunswick team to the state tournament. Ararat put together a huge two-out rally in the second inning to stake a 9-2 lead. Luke Spooner, Shea Farrell and Ryan Staples each had two hits in the inning for Ararat. The Brunswick squad narrowed the lead with four runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Thomas Harvey, Oliver Hamilton and Max Hamilton. Brunswick was able to push single runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by doubles from Cal Wilby and Luke Vasdauskas to pull within one. Reliever AJ Wolverton struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning to set the stage for the dramatic finish. Cal Wilby led off the inning with his third hit of the day, followed by a single from Harvey to put two runners on. Orlando drove a high fastball over the fence in right-center field to punch Brunswick’s ticket to the state tournament in Bridgton, starting July 16.
