AUGUSTA
Highland Green suffered a pair of tough losses in American Legion Zone 2 baseball action on Saturday against Augusta at Morton Field.
Augusta captured a 4-3 win in the opener, scoring two runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fourth. Highland Green (1-2) scored its three runs in the fifth to draw within a run.
Cam Cox singled and doubled in the loss, while Nick Merrill doubled in a run and Kyle Brennan singled.
Kaileb Hawkes went five innings, with Jacob O’Neill relieving. The duo combined on four strikeouts, four hits and one walk.
Justin Rodrigue had two hits, including a double, for Augusta, and pitched a complete game on four hits, six strikeouts and one walk. Jacob Brooks doubled and Quinn Stebbins singled.
In the second game, Augusta completed the sweep with a 3-0 victory.
Kolbe Merfeld earned the mound win on five hits, six strikeouts and one walk. Rodrigue had another two-hit game with a double and a triple.
Garrett Moody, Sam Alexander, Hawkes, Andrew Kapocius and Brennan each singled in the loss, while Alex Larson pitched six solid innings on six strikeouts and one walk.
Highland Green hosts Smith-Tobey Post 21 of Bath today at 5:30 p.m. at Mt. Ararat High School.
