No one was injured when an SUV towing an 18-foot boat went off Interstate 95 at mile 143 northbound in Pittsfield and overturned in the median Monday morning.

The boat, a 2005 Stingray with an inboard-outboard motor, was destroyed, as was the trailer, according to a news release from Steven McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

The driver, Charles Foley, 74, of Parsonsfield, who was heading to Eagle Lake for a fishing trip, may have fallen asleep, according to Trooper Blake Conrad, who investigated at the scene, McCausland said.

The SUV drifted into the median, and the trailer with the boat attached, came loose and overturned. The accident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m..

The passing lane of the interstate at mile 143 northbound was closed for about an hour while T&W Garage and Wrecker Service from Newport used a boom truck to remove the boat, McCausland said.

The road returned to normal about 10:45 a.m. Blake said no enforcement action was taken against the driver, but the fishing trip was ruined, according to the release.
