Gov. LePage’s spat with the Humane Society of the United States (“LePage slams rights group for egg farm complaint,” Page B1, June 11) seems ludicrous to me.
The Humane Society is a well-respected nonprofit concerned with preventing animal cruelty. To criticize the group for not making a statement about the safety of eating the eggs from the farm completely misses the point. The chickens were being abused, and that was the focus of the investigation Sadly, this is not the first time this egg farm has been cited for animal cruelty.
Gov. LePage further complained about the Humane Society’s role in support of the anti-bear baiting proposal. Bear baiting is certainly a rather cruel practice. And does the governor not realize how much money the National Rifle Association contributes to these battles – only on the other side?
It is important to allow free discussion of differing points of view, but it is also important to consider the facts and the intent of the agencies or individuals involved. We are fortunate to have an organization devoted to abolishing animal cruelty. We, too, are animals as well.
