A Florida man who stalked his ex-wife while she lived in Maine and sent her harassing messages was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland to serve 15 months in federal prison.
Charles Mack, 51, of Clearwater, Florida, has been in custody since his arrest in Florida on May 15, 2015, and pleaded guilty in federal court here in Maine to a stalking charge on March 3.
Mack and the victim met in 1989 and had become involved in a crime spree together, including check fraud and theft, throughout the country. They were both convicted of federal felonies, sentenced to prison and subsequently divorced, according to a prosecution document filed with the court.
Mack and the victim had not been in contact from 1990 or 1991 until Mack, living in Florida, contacted her in early 2014 by cellphone while she was living in Maine, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jilia Lipez wrote in the prosecution document. The victim is not identified in court records by name.
“The two resumed contact for a period of time, until (the victim) rebuffed the defendant’s romantic advances and told him she would not visit him in Florida. Around that time, the defendant began threatening to send nude photos of (the victim) and information about her criminal history to people in her workplace,” Lipez wrote.
Mack continued to harass the woman from January 2014 and May 2015 and caused both her and her family substantial emotional distress, according to the prosecution document.
Judge Nancy Torresen also sentenced Mack to serve three years of supervised release after completion of his prison term and pay $1,757 in restitution.
