DENVER — Rather than activate Jose Reyes following his suspension for domestic violence, the Colorado Rockies cut the shortstop on Wednesday and almost certainly will be responsible for the $34 million remaining on his contract.

Reyes completed a 59-day suspension on May 31 for violating Major League Baseball’s new domestic violence policy, then went on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment that was limited to 14 days.

Colorado reinstated the four-time All-Star from the restricted list on Wednesday and immediately designated him for assignment, giving the Rockies 10 days to trade Reyes or release him. Because the 33-year-old has five or more years of major league service, he cannot be assigned outright to a minor league team without his consent.

With Reyes suspended, Rockies rookie shortstop Trevor Story won the starting job out of spring training. He tied a major league rookie record with 10 homers in April and hit his 17th against the Yankees on Tuesday.

MARLINS: Ichiro Suzuki increased his combined Japanese and North American hit total to 4,257 by getting two hits in Miami’s 6-3 loss at San Diego. He reached on a dribbler up the first-base line in the first inning and doubled in the ninth. Pete Rose, the career MLB leader, had 4,256 hits in his major-league career.

How Suzuki’s accomplishment compares to Rose’s major-league record is the subject of some debate, as 1,278 of his hits came during his nine years with Orix in Japan’s Pacific League.

Suzuki entered Wednesday batting .347 in a part-time role and has 2,979 MLB hits, putting him on pace to become the 30th person to reach 3,000.

ROYALS: Kansas City designated infielder Omar Infante for assignment before Wednesday’s game against Cleveland, likely ending his rather unproductive tenure in Kansas City.

Infante has struggled with injuries since signing a $30.25 million, four-year deal prior to the 2014 season.

DODGERS: Manager Dave Roberts says right-hander Kenta Maeda will make his scheduled start Sunday at home against Milwaukee.

The 19-year-old had to leave Tuesday night’s game after being hit in the right knee with a line drive. His X-rays were negative, indicating the injury is a bruise.

Yasiel Puig (strained left hamstring) played five innings in a rehab game with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga.
