John Lightbody of Falmouth and Jon Capozza of North Monmouth earned age-bracket medals at the inaugural U.S. Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida.
Participants were grouped by both age and skill levels. Lightbody, 70, won a bronze medal in a 70-74 men’s doubles bracket that comprised 27 teams. He partnered with Roland Calingasan of Clifton Park, New York.
Capozza, 68, won silver in the 65-69 men’s doubles along with Jim Stuckey of Peoria, Illinois. Their bracket had 24 teams.
The event paid out $25,000 in prize money and included 835 players from 10 countries and 35 states.
The Falmouth High School sailing team finished its spring season with a second-place finish in the National Invitational Team Racing Regatta in Wayzata, Minnesota, on May 28-29. Falmouth was one of three New England schools to quality for the event and was the only team from Maine to participate.
Team members included seniors Adam Meyers and Cameron Loncoski, junior Grace Mooradian, sophomores Sierra Fahrman, Peter Morrissette, Caleb Robinson and Owen White; and freshmen Catherine Carpenter and Dylan Leighton. The team is coached by Dick Levesque.
Jason Dolley used a pitching wedge to ace the 128-yard eighth hole at Sable Oaks on May 22 while playing with Steve Shugars, Todd Bacon and Jake Nicely.
Blaine Benson aced the fourth hole at Nonesuch River Golf Club on May 22. Benson used a 6-hybrid for the 158-yard shot, which was witnessed by Peter Plante, Steve Hersey and Joel Norton.
Bob Barber made a hole-in-one on the second hole during Saturday Sweeps competition at Biddeford-Saco Country Club on May 29.
Rick Dickson aced the eighth hole at Sable Oaks Golf Club on May 31. Fou Hamilton, Beth Pizzo and Kevin Normand witnessed Dickson’s shot, which was made with a pitching wedge.
Peter Kurkarnaza used a 7-iron to ace the 157-yard eighth hole at Biddeford-Saco Country Club on June 1. Butch Laroche and Bruce Rubin witnessed the feat.
Sandi Piper scored a hole-in-one on the 107-yard sixth hole at Poland Spring Golf Course on May 31. Piper used a 5-hybrid for the shot, which was witnessed by Emily Piper, Maureen Mayo and Nina Bartlett.
Tommy Thompson used a 9-iron to ace the 132-yard sixth hole at Poland Spring Golf Course on June 2. Jon Ray and Dennis Verrill witnessed the shot.
Judy Giardino aced the 107-yard sixth hole at Poland Spring Golf Course on June 3. Giardino used a 9-iron. The shot was witnessed by Jim Giardino.
Peggy Pollard used an 8-iron to make a hole-in-one on the 112-yard fourth hole at Spring Meadows Golf Club on June 2. Priscilla Cutts, Mary Feltovic and Claudette Beaumont witnessed the shot.
John Conley carded a hole-in-one on the 145-yard 11th hole at Val Halla Golf Course on June 3. The shot was witnessed by Joe Gildart.
