Maine State Ballet will present a two-ballet program in August, for its summer season.
Audience favorite “Can-Can Parisian” (to Jacques Offenbach’s “Gaite Parisienne”) is a glitzy story ballet with plenty of acting and humor, culminating in the high-kicking can-can dance. The program will be balanced by a much more classical ballet, “Raymonda,” in excerpts newly choreographed by artistic director Linda Miele.
“Raymonda,” a 19th-century creation of Alexander Glazunov and Marius Petipa, is less commonly known and not as widely produced as other story ballets. This performance provides a valuable opportunity to experience the ballet’s exquisite music and choreography.
Student dancers at Maine State Ballet’s summer intensive program have the valuable opportunity to draw inspiration from polished professionals, both in class and on stage. The ballet company’s six-week summer training intensive takes place alongside rehearsals for the August performances.
