The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance presented the 2016 Maine Literary Awards on Thursday. Among them were three talented young writers who took the youth awards in poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

Poet Lizzy Lemieux won for a poem one judge said showed “cultured depth” beyond her years. Emma Levy was recognized for an essay about a summer encounter noted for its dramatic tension and nuanced prose. And Greg Nam’s narrative science-fiction story took the fiction prize.

“These winners are not only obviously gifted writers, they also have the much-needed encouragement of their teachers and families,” said Josh Bodwell, executive director of the alliance.
