The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team was honored with several awards in All-NESCAC teams announced by the league on Thursday afternoon.
Head coach Conor Smith was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year, while first-year Jerry Jiang earned Rookie of the Year. Luke Tercek and Luke Trinka were also named as First Team All-NESCAC selections.
Tereck, a sophomore, and Trinka, a senior, were selected to the All- NESCAC First Team in doubles for the first time in their collegiate careers following a 17-5 season in the No. 1 position for the Polar Bears.
Tereck also landed on the First Team in singles as he amassed an 18-8 record while reaching the finals at the USTA/ITA New England Regional Championship and the Wallach Invitational this fall.
Trinka was named to the Second Team in singles following a 12-4 campaign.
The pair will compete in the NCAA doubles championship while Tereck will also participate in the NCAA singles championship.
Jiang was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year following a fantastic first-year campaign. At No. 4 singles throughout the spring, he went 16-5 for the Polar Bears.
Jiang has been paired with Kyle Wolfe all season at No. 2 doubles, as the duo reached the USTA/ITA New England Regional Championship semifinal last fall and posted a 14-6 mark.
Jiang is the third Bowdoin player to collect the award, joining Kyle Wolstencroft (2012) and Stephen Sullivan (2008).
Smith was voted the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers for the second time in his five-year career, having also received the accolade in 2012. Smith led the Polar Bears to the No. 2 seed in the NESCAC Championship, which matched the program’s highest-ever seed in the conference tournament.
Bowdoin also earned its 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament in 17 seasons and 18th appearance overall.
Women’s tennis
Four Bowdoin athletes have earned All-NESCAC honors in awards.
Junior Joulia Likhanskaia was named First Team All-NESCAC in singles and joined Tiffany Cheng as a Second Team All-Conference doubles duo. Kyra Silitch and Tess Trinka also collected Second Team All- NESCAC doubles.
Likhanskaia was named First Team All- NESCAC in singles for the third time in her collegiate career. The 2014 NESCAC Rookie of the Year has posted a 16-10 record in the No. 1 position for the Polar Bears.
She was also named to the Second Team in doubles for the second straight year with teammate Cheng. Bowdoin’s top doubles pairing owns an impressive 21-5 overall record this season.
Likhanskaia was invited to compete in the NCAA singles championship in Kalamazoo, Mich., while Likhanskaia and Cheng were selected for the doubles portion of the championship.
Silitch and Trinka earned Second Team All- NESCAC consideration following a successful year playing primarily at number two doubles for the Polar Bears. The duo went 11-7 this spring for Bowdoin, including five straight wins in late March and early April.
Women’s lacrosse
Four Polar Bears were honored in All-Region awards handed out by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association on Friday.
Seniors Emma Beecher and Lindsay Picard were named First Team All-Pilgrim Region. Senior Megan O’Connor and sophomore Hannah Hirschfeld were recognized as Second Team All-Pilgrim Region.
The four players were Bowdoin’s leading scorers this spring. Beecher and Picard were tied for the team lead with 46 points on the season. Beecher scored a team-best 34 goals and dished out 12 assists, while Picard netted 33 goals and dealt a team-high 13 helpers. The duo were also among the team leaders in draw controls (Picard 43, Beecher 32) and caused turnovers (Picard 18, Beecher 16).
O’Connor finished the year with 31 goals and seven assists for 38 points while ranking among the team leaders with 19 groundballs. Hirschfeld scored 19 times with eight assists this spring, racking up 18 ground balls on the year.
Field hockey
Bowdoin senior Kim Kahnweiler has been honored for her work on the field and in the classroom by being named to the Academic All-District At-Large team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An Economics major with a 3.79 GPA, Kahnweiler anchored a Bowdoin defense that permitted just 16 goals in 21 games (0.73 GAA) and finished the season as NESCAC Champions and NCAA Division III finalists.
She also added two goals and three assists in 2015, giving her four goals and seven assists for 15 career points from the backfield.
Kahnweiler is a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) first-team All- American in 2015 and was named the 2015 NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The co-captain is also a two-time NESCAC and All-New England first-team honoree and multiple-time Academic All-NESCAC recipient.
Last week she was named co-winner of the school’s Anne L.E. Dane Award for Outstanding Leadership by a Female Athlete.
Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All- America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
