PORTLAND (AP) — The National Endowment for the Arts is giving $25,000 toward the redesign of a Portland park that was saved by a public referendum in 2014.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu announced the grant in support of Congress Square Park. The city is working with the Portland Public Art Committee and Friends of Congress Square Park on the redesign.

The half-acre park was the subject of a much-debated public vote in 2014. The city wanted to sell most of it to a hotel owner but voters decided to protect it.

City officials say they are working on more grants to fund the redesign. The city is in the process of selecting design and art consultants to develop concepts for the park. A design team will be chosen this month.
