“God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

Romans 5:5

Pentecost

This Sunday commemorates the receiving of the Holy Spirit by the early church, and it is sometimes referred to as the birthday of the church. The disciples were gathered together in fear, when suddenly came the sound as of a rushing wind, and tongues of fire came to rest on each one’s head. They were given the gift of communication in other languages, and so filled were they with the very breath, life and energy of God that their fear gave way to joy, and they burst forth to tell the good news to the world. Pentecost brings Easter to a close, but it promises new beginnings, an invitation to dream new dreams, and a new vision for the church and the world. The events of Pentecost are not just something that took place two thousand years ago. God’s spirit is alive and present in the world today. When we need healing, or strength and courage to face great challenges in our lives, we need only to pray for God’s Spirit to enter in and dwell in our hearts. No one fully understands how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. It is simply a manifestation of the mystery and miracle of God’s grace.
