The South Portland Public Library has a couple special events coming up in May. Both events are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. See www.southportlandlibrary.com or call 767-7660 for more information.

The first is an author talk with mystery writer Gerard Bianco, on Saturday, May 14, 2-4 p.m.

The second is a flash-fiction session with CB Anderson on Saturday, May 21, 1-4:30 p.m.

Bianco is an author, editor, teacher and writing coach who holds a master’s degree in writing. His latest book is a collection of stories entitled, “A Sharp Bend in the Road: 17 Intriguing Stories,” a few which are set in Maine. He is also working on a new book called, “Deal Me a Killer,” which will be published by Neptune Press in January of 2017.

Copies of Bianco’s books will be available for purchase at a reception and signing after the talk.

Pre-registration is required for the flash-fiction session with Anderson. Sign up in person or call 767-7660, ext. 2.

Flash-fiction prose, at its best, seizes readers and doesn’t let go. But the question Anderson will answer is how to produce work that is pared to its essence without losing the essentials of character, conflict and subtext.

Anderson’s work has appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, the Huffington Post, Boston Magazine and elsewhere. She lives in Massachusetts and Maine and teaches writing at Boston University.

Mystery writer Gerard Bianco will hold an author talk at the South Portland Public Library on May 14.

Author CB Anderson will lead participants in a flash fiction workshop at the South Portland Public Library on May 21.
