Blessed Motherhood
Mother’s Day will be here in a couple of days, and mothers everywhere will be showered with cards, gifts, flowers and special meals. For one day of the year mothers are put on a pedestal, and, in some cases, raised to angelic status. For the rest of the year most of us are just our own imperfect selves who did our best to live up to the responsibilities that were thrust upon us, and who may simply be content with a fair measure of love, respect, and in some cases, forgiveness for any muddled parenting we may be guilty of. We did our best and eventually we sent them off into the world with our blessing. God chose Mary to be the mother of his son because of her willingness to bear the burden of being a mother to such a special one. She bore the pain of his birth and his death upon the cross, and there is evidence that in between she had a few of the same parenting problems that we may have had with our own children. There are as many kinds of mothers as there are stars in the heavens, so in the words of Charles Dickens’ Tiny Tim, “God bless us every one.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
