Bean supper

A baked bean supper will be held on Saturday, April 30, from 5-6 p.m. at North Windham Union Church, Route 302, North Windham. The menu includes two kinds of beans, red hot dogs, ham, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, brown bread, homemade rolls and pies. Teens and adults, $8; children no charge.

VFW Chili Cook-Off

Enter your favorite Chili in the second annual VFW Chili Cook-Off to be held at the Windham Veterans Center from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. This year prizes are even higher with first place $150, second $100, third $50. Call Willie at 228-4329 to get an anonymous chili entry number and deliver your chili between 4:30 and 5 p.m. on the 30th. Once again, Applebee’s will provide New England North Manager Jeff Gambadella to judge entries. There will also be a silent auction with more than 75 items. Call Willie if you have an item to donate to the VFW. Chili entrants and children under 12 are free, all others are $8. All proceeds go directly to help veterans and their families. The veterans center is located at 35 Veterans Drive in Windham, behind Hannaford.

Memorial Day

Following is a list of local veterans who have passed away since May 2015 who will be recognized on Memorial Day with a bell-tolling ceremony at the Windham Veterans Center.

Wednesday vets

The Veterans’ Social Mixer at the Windham Veterans Center is held Wednesdays from 9-11 a.m. and is becoming very popular. Veterans are welcome to drop in and have coffee with fellow vets and see what’s going on.

American Legion meets

American Legion Field Allen Post 148 will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4, at the social will be followed by a 6 p.m. business meeting. Members are urged to attend as there Memorial Day preparations on the agenda.

• Star Wars Day

On Wednesday, May 4, join the library for Star Wars Day celebrations from 10 a.m.-6:45 p.m.

Sponsored in part by friends at Casablanca Comics and Bull Moose, there is a whole day of fun activities planned, including three showings of the new movie. All ages are welcome to participate, whether or not they are decked out in their favorite costume. The Force will definitely be with us, will you be? • Lawyers in Libraries

In early May, lawyers across the state will spend time in local libraries to draw attention to Law Week. Windham lawyer Dawn D. Dyer will be at Windham’s library to offer information about free resources, low-cost legal assistance, and even 10-minute consultations – all for free. Call Barbara at the library (892-1908) to schedule a time to talk to Dyer.

MayFair

Windham Hill UCC will hold MayFair on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Features include a church-wide yard sale, boutique of housewares and craft materials, a plant sale, bake sale, book sale and refreshments including muffins and coffee for sale in the morning and grilled hot dogs, chips and soda at 11 a.m.

Church supper

A baked bean supper will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Friends Church, Route 202, Windham. The menu includes baked beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $2 for children under 12.

Shredding fundraiser

Windham School-Aged Child Care is holding a document shredding fundraiser on Saturday, May 7, in the Home Depot parking lot from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. An estimated donation for a filled file box is $5. Large amounts are accepted. Call Donna Cobb, 892-2002 if you have questions.

Grief support meetings

VNA Home Health Hospice offers an open grief support meeting on Tuesday, May 3, and every first Tuesday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. at North Windham Union Church, Route 302. For more information, call Linda Hopkins, bereavement support coordinator for VNA Home Health Hospice, at 400-8714. This is sponsored by North Windham Union Church’s UCC Mission Committee, free of charge.

Electronic recycling

All towns are welcome to the electronic recycling opportunity from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Windham Mall. Enter on Veterans Drive, off Route 302 next to Friendly’s. Recycle computers, monitors, TVs of all sizes, printers, cordless and cell phones, VCR, DVD Audio equipment, stereos, speakers. No household appliances (stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, vacuums). Hosted by Windham Hill United Church of Christ. Monetary donations support local missions for the community.

Pickleball tournament

The high school Project Graduation 2016 is planning a Pickleball Tournament to be held at the high school gym on Saturday, May 21. Check-in is at 8 a.m., and games start at 9 a.m. Cost is $20 per player, per division. Proceeds benefit Project Graduation. Register by May 1. Annual golf scramble

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church is holding a golf scramble on Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at Spring Meadows Golf Course, Gray. The day begins with registration at noon, a cookout following golf and awards ceremony following the cookout. Proceeds will benefit the church and its ministries, which includes the Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors, RSU 14 Backpack Program for school supplies; Monday Meals (free community dinner program, Essentials Pantry for families’ non-food needs, and Long Creek Youth Development with Christmas gifts and birthday cards. Thrift shop opens

The North Windham Union Church thrift shop is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon. Spring bargains may be found in adult and children’s clothing. The children’s room has books, games and toys. Shoppers will find a lot of household items that may be great for camp. The Thrift Shop is at the church, near the corner of routes 302 and 115.
