BRUNSWICK — A custodian who worked the night shift at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School has been issued a criminal summons for unlawful sexual touching of a minor.

Earl Ater, 59, was issued a summons March 31 by Brunswick police. The alleged victim, a 16-year-old girl, was not a Brunswick student, according to Superintendent of Schools Paul Perzanoski.

“We were notified that day (by police),” Perzanoski said Wednesday, “and (Ater) was placed on leave April 1.” He added that Ater did not work on March 31.

The School Department sent a letter to parents April 6. “We let them know what happened … and that at no time were any kids in danger,” Perzanoski said. He added that Ater is still on leave.

Brunswick police would not release additional details of the case Wednesday, citing an ongoing investigation.
