Drivers passing through the West Gardiner toll plaza of the Maine Turnpike on Thursday and Friday will experience a series of traffic stops.

Turnpike officials said Tuesday that 25-minute stoppages will begin at 10 p.m. Thursday and continue through 5 a.m. Friday. Lane closures will be needed while construction crews erect a canopy for new open-road tolling lanes.

The $6 million project to add open-road tolling, in which drivers who have E-Z Passes don’t have to slow down, began in April 2015 and is to be completed this fall. Open-road tolling is operating now at the turnpike plaza in New Gloucester.

Turnpike officials said motorists should prepare for delays Thursday night and Friday morning or take other routes.
