YARMOUTH — Xander Kostelnik walked, stole second and scored on Josh Chapman’s walk-off single in the eighth inning Thursday as North Yarmouth Academy defeated Richmond 3-2 in a season-opening high school baseball game.
Kostelnik scored on a passed ball in the second before the Bobcats tied the game in the third when Matt Rimes raced home on Matt Holt’s sacrifice fly.
Damon Nichols doubled and came home on Andrew Keith’s single as the Panthers took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. Richmond forced extra innings with a run in the sixth when Nate Kendrick scored from third on Nate Vintinner’s groundout.
SCARBOROUGH 8, SANFORD 3: John Timpson’s bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning lifted Scarborough (1-0) to a 5-3 lead against the Spartans (0-2) at Sanford.
Timpson later scored as the Red Storm added three runs in the inning to make it 8-3.
Morgan Pratt had three hits for Scarborough, including a double. Tylar Burgess had a pair of singles and scored for Sanford.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 14, MT. ARARAT 7: Isabella Coleman scored six goals while leading North Yarmouth Academy in an opener at Topsham.
Amber Rose and Callie Sturgeon added three goals each for the Panthers, with Emily Taylor and Zelda Clegg also scoring. Ronni Pelletier had four goals, and Shannon Harty, Erin Tome and Jessica Clouder also scored for Mt. Ararat.
Jenna Block had 13 saves for NYA. Eleanor Skinner made seven for Mt. Ararat.
SOFTBALL
LEAVITT 6, GARDINER 1: Kaitlyn Deblois homered to lead Leavitt over Gardiner in an opener.
Angela Daigle and Ashley Kelly added two hits apiece for the Hornets.
