A former attorney at Portland’s Verrill Dana law firm and current treasurer at Bowdoin College will be joining The Jackson Laboratory as chief financial officer.

S. Catherine “Katy” Longley intends to join the Bar Harbor biomedical research institute in August, according to a release from the nonprofit laboratory.

“Katy is a seasoned executive with deep financial leadership experience,” said Chuck Hewett, the lab’s chief operating officer. “Her expertise in audit and budgeting, debt issuance and financial strategy combined with her broad experience and responsibilities beyond finance will be critical assets to help grow The Jackson Laboratory to its next stage.”

For nearly 14 years, Longley has served as the senior vice president for finance and administration and treasurer at Bowdoin College where she is the senior financial officer responsible for the institution’s strategic financial planning and budgeting, capital structure, operating budget and risk management and procurement.

She spent 12 years practicing law with Verrill & Dana, including six as a partner. Longley also served for seven years as a commissioner in the administration of former Maine Gov. Angus King where she had oversight for professional and financial regulation.
