Firefighters battled wildfires in Bridgton, Wells and elsewhere in Maine on Saturday as dry conditions triggered alerts for dangerous fire conditions in much of the state.

The fire in Bridgton broke out about 1 p.m. on South Bridgton Road near the Sebago town line, a Cumberland County dispatcher said. The fire was largely extinguished an hour later.

Firefighters dealt with a wildfire near Wire Road in Wells late Saturday afternoon. Fire Capt. Jim Moore said it was contained after burning 5.3 acres of woods. No one was hurt and no buildings were damaged, he said.

The Maine Forest Service said on its social media sites that it also responded Saturday to wildfires in Milo, Bradford, Sedgwick and Bois Bubert Island off Milbridge.

The forest service said it has an investigative team consisting of four forest rangers looking into the cause of the wildfire in Old Orchard Beach that burned 28 acres and threatened apartment and condominium complexes before it was extinguished Friday afternoon.

The forest service and the National Weather Service in Gray issued a high fire danger alert Saturday for most of the state due to very dry conditions and winds with gusts up to 25 mph.
