A Monmouth man whose vehicle struck and killed a yellow Labrador retriever last week has been charged in connection with the April 4 incident.
Skylar Dann, 19, went to the Winthrop Police Department on April 6, two days after the accident on Narrows Pond Road, according to Lt. Dan Cook. Dann has been summoned on charges of leaving the scene of a property damage accident and failure to report an accident by the quickest means, Cook said.
The accident happened on a Monday evening, as the dog was searching for a ball that had been thrown by one of her owners, Steven Firlotte of Winthrop. The dog, whose name was Lexi, went into the road and was hit by a silver-colored vehicle driven by Dann.
Dann drove away after the accident, according to police. Lexi, who was almost 2 years old, died a few minutes later.
Firlotte then launched a search for the driver, contacting friends and neighbors and posting signs near his home. Police also launched an investigation.
The next day, Dann came forward to tell Firlotte he had been driving the car, Firlotte said. The day after that, Dann contacted the police.
While Firlotte was angry and saddened by the accident, he appreciated the fact that Dann eventually talked to him and the police.
“The accident isn’t the issue. It’s that he didn’t stop,” he said last week. “Once (the driver) found out the dog died, he was very taken aback all day. … He voluntarily called me back and apologized and realized he made a huge mistake. He did the commendable thing.”
