April at the library

A Coloring for Adults group meets Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m.-noon.

Monica Wood, author, will be reading and signing her newest book, “The One-in-a-Million Boy.” The event will be on Wednesday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the Pat Barter Speaker Series.

Events are free and open to all.

Park opening

The Maine Wildlife Park, located on Route 26 in Gray, will open for the 2015 season on Friday, April 15, at 9:30 a.m.

A special school vacation program entitled Winter Ecology with Saint Joseph’s College, will be held on Wednesday, April 20, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Admission to the park is free for ages 3 and under; $5.50 ages 4-12; $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for seniors.

Prescription drug safety forum

Casco Bay CAN (Create Awareness Now) is excited to host local law enforcement representatives to present information to elders on how to keep drugs safe and dispose of properly, drug trends in your community, information on reporting drug concerns, prescription drug use in Maine as well as questions and answers. Elders are welcome to attend this free community forum and bring any expired or unwanted medications for law enforcement to dispose of properly. It will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 11 a.m. at the Gray Public Library, 5 Hancock St.

Benefit golf tournament

The 14th annual Gray-New Glocuester High School Baseball/Softball Golf Tournament fundraiser will be held on Sunday, May 1, at the Spring Meadows Golf Club in Gray with check-in set for 11:30 a.m., and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

Sponsorships range from $75-$500 and include a specified number of golf participants, signs on specified holes, as well as inclusion in a program of events. Golfers can sign up individually for an 18-hole round of golf, including cart, dinner and prizes, for $85 or they can work to form a team of four golfers for $300 (savings of $10 per golfer). Each golfer will also receive an additional free round of golf.

The event will follow a shotgun start in a scramble format with one team score. The format allows for all levels of golfers to compete. Mulligans and strings will be available for purchase and a putting contest will be held along with a 50/50 raffle. Dinner and prizes for top teams will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. Prizes will be given in several categories based on team scores and individual contests. April supper

A public supper consisting of baked beans, casseroles, salads, homemade breads and desserts will be held on Saturday, April 23, 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on Route 115. Spring fun at Gray Recreation

Computer basics

OTT Communications is underwriting a Gray-New Gloucester Adult Ed course called the Computer Basics Series. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., beginning April 27, for six weeks and are for adults of all ages.

The class is designed to be a friendly, informal introduction suited to students who are completely new to computers or have dabbled a little. Classes will cover topics such as operating systems, Web searching, storing files, emailing, digital safety, etc. Participants may join all four sessions, or choose to attend the classes that best suit their needs. The class will work with PC computers in the lab, but will also discuss the differences with Macs. Attendees are welcome to bring their own laptop.

The six-week program offers sessions on four specific topics: Introduction to Computers: April 27 and May 4 (two weeks), Google and Email Basics: May 11 and 18 (two weeks), Exploring the Internet: May 25 (one week), Keeping Your Kids Safe Online and in Social Media: June 1 (one week).

New on Gray TV

“The Empty Chair – Exposing Addiction” will air Sundays at 7 p.m. to educate and raise awareness about addiction. Gray Community TV pays tribute to the men on board the Thresher on the anniversary of its sinking. All hands were lost.

“A Tribute to the U.S.S. Thresher” takes place Sunday, April 10, at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“Willy Wonka Jr.,” a Fiddlehead Children’s Theater Production at Gray-New Gloucester High School, takes place Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m.

Lions contest winners

Three Gray-New Gloucester High School students competed in the annual Lions oratorical contest held March 31 in the high school library.

Emilie Sanborn took first place with her thoughtful presentation on feminism and what it means in today’s society as seen through the eyes of today’s youth.

Second place went to Morgan Reilly for her heartfelt presentation on the many meanings and the powerful impact of those three little words “I love you.”

Josh Kuchinski, drawing on his drama club experience, took third place with an interesting and entertaining talk about the coming trend in driverless cars.

Sanborn will go on to compete with winners from other area clubs in a regional competition and, if successful there, a statewide competition in Auburn on April 30.
