BRUNSWICK

Brunswick police arrested a man for disorderly conduct early Saturday morning after he allegedly entered a diner and attempted to start a fight.

James Smith, 37, of Brunswick was arrested and charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention, disorderly conduct and refusing to sign a criminal summons — all misdemeanors.

The disturbance was reported at 3:32 a.m. Saturday at The Brunswick Diner on Pleasant Street.

According to Brunswick Police Cmdr. Marc Hagan, Smith allegedly was yelling at people and causing an issue. Police had removed him earlier that morning from J&R Cards on Cushing Street and moved him along after he was banging on windows in back of the police station, issuing him disorderly conduct warnings.

When police arrived at the diner, Hagan said Smith was walking away. Officers had to forcibly take him to the ground because he wouldn’t allow himself to be arrested, Hagan said. Smith was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
