Authorities on Friday identified the drivers of a school bus and a sport utility vehicle that collided head-on Thursday afternoon in Boothbay, sending three students to a hospital and leaving others with minor injuries.
The driver of the SUV, 47-year-old Lori L. Dishman of Boothbay, was also taken to the hospital after the crash. The driver of the school bus was 79-year-old Robert E. Jacobson of Boothbay Harbor, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The students transported by ambulance were riding the bus home from the Boothbay Region elementary and high schools. Their ages ranged between 12 and 15. Three other students reported minor injuries and were released into the custody of their parents at the scene, Lt. Rand Maker said in a written statement.
“None of their injuries were considered to be serious,” Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said Thursday evening.
Maker said the bus was carrying 12 students from the Boothbay Region Elementary School when the SUV, a 2003 Oldsmobile, heading south in the vicinity of 364 Back Narrows Road, crossed over the centerline, entered the northbound lane and hit the bus.
As of Friday morning, no one had been charged as a result of the accident. Maker said the investigation is continuing, and when it’s done investigators will consult with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office to determine if civil or criminal charges are appropriate.
Dishman and the three injured children were taken after the crash to LincolnHealth-Miles Campus health care center in Damariscotta. Police had no further information on their conditions Friday.
The school bus sustained minor damage and was driven from the accident scene, but the SUV was totaled.
Someone called 911 around 2:49 p.m. to report the accident. Back Narrows Road was closed to traffic and did not reopen until 4:25 p.m.
Lincoln County deputies and the Boothbay Harbor Police Department, Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service and the Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service responded to the crash.
