Democrat Susan Deschambault of Biddeford won Tuesday’s special election and will represent Senate District 32 through the end of the year.
Deschambault had 1,785 votes, or 57 percent, compared to 1,117 votes, or 41 percent, for her Republican opponent, Stephen Martin of Biddeford.
A small number of votes were cast for a third candidate, Alan Brown, whose name appeared on the ballot despite having withdrawn from the election in February. Votes for Brown were treated as blanks.
District 32 covers Biddeford, Kennebunkport, Arundel, Dayton, Lyman and Alfred.
Deschambault will fill out the unexpired term of former Sen. David Dutremble, a Biddeford Democrat who resigned the seat in January. Voters will return to the polls in November to elect a senator for District 32 to serve a full two-year term.
Deschambault could face opposition in the June 14 Democratic primary from former Biddeford mayor Joanne Twomey. Her nomination papers are currently being reviewed for alleged irregularities by the Secretary of State’s Office.
“Congratulations to Senator-elect Deschambault on her victory in tonight’s special election,” Jessica Post, spokeswoman for the national Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, said in a press release. “This latest win continues a clear pattern of Democratic successes that will continue into the Fall, not just in state legislative elections, but all the way to the top of the ballot.”
