KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Atlanta Braves released high-priced Nick Swisher on Monday, ditching a former All-Star whose numbers plummeted the last two seasons.
The team won’t take much of a financial hit, even though Swisher is guaranteed $15 million this season. The Braves are set to receive a total of $14,631,148 from the Cleveland Indians by June 30 as part of last season’s trade that brought Swisher and outfielder Michael Bourn to Atlanta for third baseman Chris Johnson.
Swisher, who can play first base and the outfield, hit just .195 with four homers and 17 RBI in 46 games after coming to the Braves.
There was no room for him on the roster after the team signed Kelly Johnson, Jeff Francoeur, Gordon Beckham and Emilio Bonifacio to contend for spots on the bench.
“If he was on an American League team, there might be a place for him” as a designated hitter, Atlanta Manager Fredi Gonzalez said before a spring training game against the Houston Astros.
“But it would have been a tough fit. I couldn’t get him at-bats.”
REDS: Raisel Iglesias will be Cincinnati’s opening day starter against the Phillies, taking the top spot in their inexperienced rotation because Anthony DeSclafani is hurt.
Manager Bryan Price said Monday that DeSclafani has a strained oblique that will sideline him indefinitely.
Iglesias made only 16 starts and two relief appearances last season, pitching 951/3 innings overall. He was 3-7 with a 4.15 ERA.
BLUE JAYS: Toronto claimed catcher/first baseman Jesus Montero off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
The 26-year-old Montero hit .223 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 38 games for Seattle last season.
PHILLIES: Philadelphia signed outfielder Will Venable to a minor league contract, a day after he was released by the Cleveland Indians.
The 33-year-old Venable hit .244 with six home runs in 135 games with San Diego and Texas last season.
MARINERS: Robinson Cano hit a drive over the giant batter’s eye in center field for his seventh spring homer, and Seattle rallied for a 6-4 win over a Kansas City Royals split-squad.
DODGERS: Pitcher Jamey Wright has announced his retirement after 19 seasons in the majors.
RANGERS: Veteran right-hander Jeremy Guthrie has been granted his release by Texas since he won’t be on its 40-man roster.
ASTROS: Houston sent first baseman Jon Singleton to the minors, a week before opening day.
The 24-year-old Singleton has a $2 million salary this season.
He hit .151 with three home runs in 22 games this spring.
ORIOLES: Chris Tillman will be Baltimore’s opening day starter for the third consecutive season. Manager Buck Showalter said he considered Yovani Gallardo and Ubaldo Jimenez, but Tillman’s experience was a factor.
Tillman was 11-11 with a 4.99 ERA last year.
