A special election is set for Tuesday to fill the vacancy left by state Sen. David Dutremble, who resigned in January to focus on his family and his battle with alcohol addiction.

Democrat Susan Deschambault will face off against Republican Stephen Martin. Both candidates live in Biddeford.

The winner will serve the remainder of Dutremble’s term, which ends in November. Both Deschambault and Martin will be on the November ballot as they seek a full term representing the district.

Senate District 32 covers Biddeford, Alfred, Arundel, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman.

Dutremble, a Biddeford firefighter who also runs an electrical business, stepped down in January. He was first elected in 2012.

Deschambault, a former city councilor and current chairwoman of the Biddeford Planning Board, worked for 43 years as a social worker for the Maine Department of Corrections.

Martin retired after nearly 30 years in law enforcement and has worked as a bail commissioner since 2007.
