WELLS — York County Community College will receive $69,000 to start an American studies concentration at the school, U.S. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has announced.
YCCC is one of two Maine organizations that will receive grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The other is the Maine Humanities Council, which will receive $82,248 to fund book groups for Maine veterans.
“I’m very excited that two organizations doing great work in our state will receive funding for these important projects,” said Pingree in a statement. “Many veterans have already benefited from Maine Humanities Council’s book groups by giving them a unique way to discuss what they’re going through with others who’ve had similar experiences – I’m thrilled that these discussions will be able to continue.”
The American studies concentration will be a first for YCCC. The concentration will include course work, as well as speakers and field trips, with a focus on New England history.
“The new program at York County Community College will allow those students to dig into American culture, history and politics in a way they may not have been able to otherwise,” Pingree said.
