Finding Peace
The first line of a favorite song reads, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” But how can one find peace in a world filled with hatred and violence? The news media are brimming over with reports of killings, beatings, racial unrest, and child abuse, to name just a few. And there are always wars and fighting going on in some parts of the world. But that is the way it has been down through the millennia. The Roman Pax Romana, or Roman Peace, was achieved through violent means, both militarily and through crucifixion, which is undoubtedly one of the most excruciating and humiliating forms of execution. Many believe that the only way to peace is through military force, but peace is not the absence of conflict. Peace cannot be brought about by force. The Greek word translated peace literally means unity which comes through forgiveness, restored relationships and being at one with God. When our spirits rest in Jesus and he in us we will experience a peace that so fills our hearts and minds that we will feel secure in his love even in the midst of turmoil. And the best part is that no one can ever take that away from us.
